Scholarships

There are many opportunities for students to receive scholarship help to attend U of A Summer Music Camps. Among these opportunities are:

Captain Selection
Captains are selected each year from students attending Music Camp, using a process that involves input from the students' hometown teacher(s), Music Camp conductors, counselors, and section rehearsal/master class/elective teachers. Students designated as Captains for Jr. High Band Camp receive a $150 scholarship to camp for the next year. Captains during Sr. High Band or Jr./Sr. Orchestra receive a $175 scholarship for the next year.

Outstanding Musician Awards
Students selected as Outstanding Musician for the Symphony Orchestra, Senior High Honor Band or Junior High Honor Band, receive a full tuition scholarship to camp for the next year. Students selected as Outstanding Musician for any other Music Camp large ensemble (band or orchestra) receive a $150 scholarship to camp for the next year.

Hometown Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded to each school for distribution to their students, based on the school's camp enrollment from the previous year. Each school receives a half scholarship for every 10 students from their school who attend camp. Many school music programs also provide additional scholarships for their students to attend camp; the booster club or other parent/supporter organization in each town often sponsors these scholarships. Distribution of these scholarship awards is at the discretion of the school's band/orchestra directors.

Named Scholarships
The Janzen-Tollette Scholarship is a needs and merit based scholarship named in honor of University of Arkansas Director of Bands Emeritus Eldon A. Janzen, his wife Nel, and former Razorback Marching Band Drum Major Sanford Tollette.

The Barbara Wallace Scholarship is awarded each year to an outstanding string student based on the recommendation of the Music Camp string faculty, in the amount of $300.

All-State Scholarships
Students selected in their state's top all-state band or orchestra in Arkansas and contiguous states are eligible to receive a $100 scholarship toward the price of camp.

Combining Scholarships
Scholarships awarded by UA Summer Music Camp (Captain Scholarships, Outstanding Musician Awards, Named Scholarships, All State Scholarships) cannot be combined. Any of these scholarships can, however, be combined with a Hometown Scholarship.
